Youtube Is Weird

I found these homemade videos for DOP songs on Youtube. It's moving, and weirdly voyeuristic, to peer into the world of total strangers who used our songs to soundtrack a slice of their lives.

The first one is nothing but shots of a woman in training for a marathon. We see her running on overpasses, sidewalks, leafy paths, beaches. I'm guessing she's in Florida, based on the vegetation, and that she's being filmed by her loving husband, cheering her along every step of the way. But who knows? Maybe she's being stalked. The song is "Girls and Sunshine," from our first EP. There's a very small cult that thinks this is our best song and call for it at shows. We pretend not to hear them.

And in this one a young Canadian takes a snowy bike ride around his subdivision, to the tune of "Your Summer Dress."  If only we had called the song "Your Winter Dress," this would be the perfect video. I love it. Thanks, nastyrats!

Valentine's Day with Band of Horses + Dirty on Purpose

We are playing a show with Band of Horses on Valentine's Day (yeah yeah we know, a commercial holiday, but having a reason to make out is always good). The good folks over at JellyNYC put together the lovefest at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple. Kinda spooky, kinda romantic? We dig it. We hope you do too. You can purchase tickets at ticketweb.com.

Just some photos from the mixing process of our Dead Volcanoes EP for RCRDLBL.com. We would listen to those songs over and over and over again... They are finally finished! We can't wait for you to hear them... The last three songs come out in February, March and April.

Looks like George is getting hungry...

Doug is the laid-back type.

Paul stares into the abyss of the machine...

Mark, George and DJ are obviously concentrating very hard.

"Leaving" Lyrics

i see you doing dishes
i know you're making wishes
for down the line

we're waiting on the weekend
as if we'll find some peace then
on down the line

you're making your advances
i think i like my chances
i'll hold the line

don't get so defensive
cause everything that ends is
still on the line

you're leaving here tonight
for no good reason
and no words to describe
it makes no difference
if i'm putting up a fight
or if i'm dead or alive
you're leaving here tonight

there's nothing I can say now
i'm like a dead volcano
just passing time

it's not enough to kiss you
i wish i could go with you
on down the line

you're leaving here tonight
for no good reason
and no words to describe
it makes no difference
if i'm putting up a fight
or if i'm dead or alive
you're leaving here tonight
you're leaving here tonight
she's leaving here tonight

it's not a rite of passage
just someone else's baggage

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: City and Colour - Body in a Box

When Dallas Green of Canadian post-hardcore act Alexisonfire needed a name for his acoustic side-project, he transposed his first and last name into "city" and "colour," a trick that is maddeningly effective in its simplicity. A Juno award for Alternative Album of the Year and about 2 billion myspace plays later, Vagrant is re-releasing his debut album "Sometimes" for the first time stateside, and we're lucky enough to bring you "Body in a Box," another study in effective simplicity. Guitars, harmonica and organ from the '70-'75 Neil Young songbook and the slightest touch of Jeff-Buckley-warble frame Green's musings on life, love and the irony of funerals, and everything clings together delightfully.

DOWNLOAD: TV On The Radio - Dancing Choose (Prefuse 73 Remix)

The lyrics of TV On The Radio's "Dancing Choose" holler sore at the idea of crooked news hounds distorting the truth to fit their own motives. The obvious thing to do with the track, then, is to call in someone to remix it - but despite the obvious ironies that lay behind Prefuse 73's re-working, the track's lyrical bite is only enhanced by the fizz and crackle Scott Herren surrounds it with, taut noise like a sprung'n'cut electrical wire flailing and lashing in back-alley puddles.

Sounds Like: Subtle, Why?, Neon Neon

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: The Morning After Girls - Shadows Evolve

Posted 1/8/2009 2:30 PM by Christen Thomas

Tags: shoegaze, pop, rock, indie, psychedelic

The Morning After Girls have been through a slew of changes since I last wrote them up for RCRD LBL, including relocations (eventually taking them from OZ to NYC) and line-up shake-ups.  But the core has remained the same - Sacha Lucashenko and Martin Sleeman have continually written brilliantly swirling shoegaze pop bangers and with their new base in the States are churning out their wearily sexy songs for this part of the world.  Check out "Shadows Evolve," from their upcoming release and if you're in NYC or LA, they're coming your way soon, check here for dates and get ready to fall for the Morning After Girls.

Sounds Like: My Best Fiend, Primal Scream, the Jesus & Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Panda Bear

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Wetdog - 8 Days

"It's all over now...Rock 'n' Roll is shit. It's dismal. Granddad danced to it. I'm not interested in it..I think music has reached an all-time low - except for The Raincoats."

That's one of the most blithely hyperbolic Johnny Rotten quotes, the kind that kept NME and Melody Maker all a-tingle for a good decade or so. While I'm not quite ready to sub London's Wetdog for the sublime Raincoats, I can definitely relate to Mr. Lydon's excitement at hearing the scraping and mewling of the new. "8 Days" has a simplicity and a lived-in newness that's both disarming and pleasantly off-putting, and I don't mind admitting that I'm a complete sucker for the British female voice. Their set was the centerpiece of one of my most enjoyable nights out in Albion, and I hope this song can do the same for you now.

Sounds Like: The Raincoats, Liliput, The Slits, The Fall

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Alexandra Hope - Whatever You Want

Alexandra Hope is a one of the brightest things to heat up the sub-zero New year....Minnesota-born but raised in Paris, she reminds me of a coy, guitar-totting Charlotte Gainsbourg infused with nonchalant sexy rock attitude. This song is a blissed-out folk ode to surviving the cold, luring us to huddle under the covers for another hour with the song on repeat as snow gracefully falls outside. She's cracking into the NY music scene with a debut album, Invisible Sunday, produced by David Muller (Fiery Furnaces) and released on Manimal (Rainbow Arabia, Hecuba, Bat For Lashes). Watch out!

Sounds Like: PJ Harvey, Duke Spirit, Liz Phair

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: The Old Ceremony - Til My Voice Is Gone

Posted 1/7/2009 12:26 PM by Samuel Duke

Tags: folk, rock, indie, americana, pop

Amidst some aqueous organ and a few prophetic lines from leadsinger Django Haskins (yes, dude's name is actually Django,) "Til My Voice Is Gone" begins like it's actually being played from the "seawall" Haskins sings about, a place where we imagine you can see orcas and sea lions and the water isn't overly salty. Then the drums kick in, and this tune turns into something like Whiskeytown on anti-depressants, super-optimistic Americana for the weekend warrior crowd. The Old Ceremony's third album Walk In Thin Air drops on February 9, so make sure to pick that up if this is your speed, it's solid.

Sounds like: Limbeck, Illinois, The Low Anthem
