VIDEO THRWBCK: Blondie - Eat to the Beat (1979)
We've always considered "Eat to the Beat", the title track off of Blondie's 4th LP, as a significant musical departure for the band, or at least from the candy-coated pop rock of their previous album Parallel Lines. Debbie Harry & Co. forgo the coy attitude cultivated hitherto and go for something much more primal (though not as primal as the artwork to The Hunter--yeesh). We love the song though, it's definitely charming in its own, savage way.

Scuzzy Bay Area rock band the May Fire are back on our radars with “Red Eye”, which continues in their vein of down and dirty ‘90s alt rock with unabashed glee. The track sounds like something straight out of Elastica’s songbook, all catchy hooks and pissed-off female vocals. It’s a shame rock music like this has become so scarce—there are few things as satisfying as a good rock hook, and as much as we love like, heady electronica, at least someone is carrying on the tradition. We commend thee, The May Fire. We commend thee.
Sounds like: The Breeders, Elastica, Veruca Salt

VIDEO THRWBCK: Elastica - Stutter (1993)
We're on a full-blown '90s kick at the moment--watching Party Girl and Unzipped, YouTubing old episodes of MTV's House of Style and of course, going through all of our old Britpop records. After Pulp and Blur, our favorite band from that era was Elastica, whose front woman Justine Frischmann embodied the spunk and style of the times. "Stutter" was their first single and it remains a classic.
VIDEO THRWBCK: The Slits - Typical Girls (1979)
Every time we hear some dumb interviewer ask some amazing all-girl band like, the Coathangers or something a question like, "So, what's it like to be an all-girl band?" A) it makes us pukey and B) we get really pissed off when the band actually answer the question instead of doing what the Slits would do, which is obviously just be awesome, not care and do whatever (which is what the Coathangers pretty much do, but we were just using them as an example). Seriously, try it sometimes.
FEATURED: Awesome music at the FADER blog

The guys over at The FADER have been in hyperdrive lately with the whole “posting awesome free music” thing. Today alone they unveiled a version of Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” by Swedish space rockers Tiedye, as well as the UK dance club Fabric’s podcast with punk/reggae legend Don Letts. So sick!
DOWNLOAD: controller.controller - History

Wow, controller.controller! Brings us back to a CMJ a few years ago where we caught them play with Death From Above 1979 and really let rip. One of our friends from Canada always who keeps us up on her countrymen’s musical endeavors (she was the first person to turn us onto DFA1979, Uncut, and totally obscure but AMAZING band the Sourkeys) IM’d us one day singing controller.controller’s praises, and we were hooked. Kind of like a dancier version of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, which in 2003 was quite a novel idea. Paper Bag have a throwback track from their debut album called “History”, check it out:
Sounds like: Radio 4, The Rapture, The Slits
TRAILER: The Gits
The Gits is a documentary about the band of the same name, who spearheaded the early-90s Seattle music scene, only to see their front woman Mia Zapata tragically murdered right before making it big. As anyone who has listened to the Gits knows, they were one of those bands that were simply a force of nature, which makes Mia's early demise even more of a heartbreak.
Tonight, for the launch of the film, Kathleen Hannah, and Allison Wolfe from Bratmobile are hosting a premiere party at the Delancey. The cream of the crop of riot grrrl's will be there, which probably means a lot of shady hair colors BUT a lot of awesome music. Also, The Gits is now playing at , so make sure to check it out. VIDEO: Cruel Black Dove - Love Song
Last week we introduced you to Cruel Black Dove, a bluesy darkwave band from Brooklyn who blend Kills-like sass and '80s goth sensibilities into tracks like their current single "Love Song". The band have released a video for "Love Song", which is the perfect visual representation of what the band is going for: dark and awesome. Check out the bassist! Badass.
The band are playing legendary underground club Crashin' In on Thursday at Galapagos in Brooklyn, so be sure to check them out!
VIDEO THRWBCK: Sonic Youth - Bull in the Heather (1994)
So, like thousands of other knowledgeable New Yorkers yesterday, we celebrated this great nation's b-day by heading down to Battery Park and checking out the Feelies/Sonic Youth show. Incredibly, we'd managed to go this long without ever seeing Sonic Youth live, and it was well worth the wait. They played "Bull in the Heather" straight off the back, and Kim Gordon just transpired amazing coolness the whole way through. Although, we must say the best part of the whole day was watching Coco Gordon Moore eat jellybeans backstage while nonchalantly watching her parents blow a couple thousand people's minds onstage. Did that sounds kind of creepy? Whatever, it was amazing.
