DOWNLOAD: Deastro - Michael, Lone Archer Of The North Shore + Parallelogram

As Deastro , 22-year-old producer and musician Randolph Chabot makes pastoral pop songs for people who believe in aliens. The Detroit native has been moving his gig around the Motor City's DIY spaces, pushing tunes loaded with swathes of harmonic color and weightless programming, the kind of music you'd listen to at night in a field while trying to trace constellations with your index finger. After self-releasing over three albums worth of material, Deastro has finally joined the roster at Ghostly, who re-released his recent "best-of" Keepers and will drop his new album Moondagger in January. As an introduction, the Ghostly crew have hooked up two tracks for download: "Michael, Lone Archer Of The North Shore," a cut from Keepers that sounds like Fuck Buttons covering the Psychedelic Furs, and "Parallelogram," the first single from Moondagger that has Chabot stepping in front of a live band to pretty ear-melting results. I mean, c'mon, looking at the above photo, did you really expect anything less awesome?
Sounds like: Fuck Buttons, Animal Collective, School Of Seven Bells

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Camp America - Any Kind Of Pulse + You Say Party! We Say Die! Remix

The term lap-pop has been sneaking its way into blogger vocab since people realized Fruity Loops wasn't a cereal, and British producer Camp America certainly loves playing in the same musical sandbox as all the cats making sugar-soaked party jams from their bedspreads. "Any Kind Of Pulse" stems from his self-titled EP of originals and sounds like Best Fwends trying to make soul music, a mid-tempo cloud of Casios and pop melodies that'll make you want to fly kites and have picnics and pet dogs. He's also given the once-over to some artists for a remix EP on Paper Bag, and we'll be unloading those tracks over the next week or so, beginning with his version of You Say Party! We Say Die!'s "Teenage Hit Wonder." The testy vocal and central guitar riff remain intact, but dude's added some propulsive beats and Laffy Taffy synths on top so that when the chorus of "Be my friend yah yah" goes over and over again you kind of wish you were playing video games with Andrew W.K. Can you imagine how sweaty and awesome that would be?
Sounds like: Totally Michael, Best Fwends, Matt And Kim

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Findlay Brown - I Had A Dream (Solo Acoustic Version) + Promised Land (Pilooski Edit)

The original version of Findlay Brown's "I Had A Dream" (hear it at his MySpace) ends with trumpets, saxes, pianos, and strings wailing hard; huge stereophonic bombast to end what is actually a pretty delicate song. Today we're offering up an exclusive download of the sparer acoustic version, which strips all of that instrumentation away in favor of Findlay's halting voice and steady acoustic. While this is the only place you can grab that version, the original will appear on his new album Love Will Find You, due in 2009 and recorded with producer Bernard Butler, who used to front a little band called Suede. Also make sure to grab Pilooski's killer edit of Findlay's cover of "Promised Land," the house classic from producer Joe Smooth. Dude goes deep!
We're throwing a little contest around these tracks, as we've been gifted with some extremely limited edition wax from Findlay to give away. If you embed the single track player of "I Had A Dream" on your blog and send the link to contests@rcrdlbl.com with the subject "FINDLAY", you'll win a very rare seven-inch of "All That I Have," produced by Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve (Erol Alkan + Richard Norris) and mixed by Kramer (Galaxie 500, Luna, Low, etc.) There are only 500 of these in the world!
Sounds like: Ed Harcourt, Sondre Lerche, Tim Williams

DOWNLOAD: Wavves - Beach Demon + Weed Demon + Wavves

Wavves is the name given the lo-fi grunge pop adventures of Nathan Williams, that handsome albeit concerned gentleman sitting on his bed. A Seinfeld-loving, skateboard-obsessed San Diegan, Mr. Williams handcuffs the muddied guitar blues of early 90s jamhounds like Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth to the honeycombed harmonies of 60s girl groups like the uh, Ronettes. In addition to both sides of his forthcoming Beach Demon Weed Demon seven-inch (the weedy B-side smacks sweetly of the Pumpkins' "Soma"), I'm super excited to also share "Wavves," Williams' saltwatered manifesto. Three songs! Infinite possibilities!
LIVE: Puma Turns 60 With Chester French, Charles Hamilton + More

After fitting the soles of so many soccer, basketball, and running stars and making a whole lot of regular guys and girls look cool, Puma deserves to throw themselves a big party for their 60th birthday. Unsurprisingly, they decided to put together four pretty stacked bills around the country, and we headed out last night to the Music Hall Of Williamsburg for the New York event with performances from Chester French, Charles Hamilton, The Knux, and DJ Jus Ske. Hamilton played his blog hit "Windows Media Player" and the Chester French boys unloaded "She Loves Everybody;" cameras flashed a lot and we left pretty jazzed. In essence, Puma made turning 60 look cool, so props for that.

About two weeks ago we introduced you to the Neptunes' new pop proteges, Chester French. Their single "She Loves Everybody" has been making the rounds for a minute (including a slot on an episode of Entourage) and in addition to the Neptunes remix we already gifted, we now have a much more maximal reworking of the tune from our good friend Steve Aoki. Steve's stepped it up with some big room drum hits and a pretty destructive synth line (think the "Phantom Pt. II" hook with more throb) so this should lodge nicely amongst the usual dancefloor suspects. NYC'ers, you can catch Chester French for free tonight at the Music Hall Of Williamsburg alongside Charles Hamilton, The Knux, and Jus Ske as part of Puma's 60th Birthday celebrations. Tickets are available at Puma stores around the city. More info on that and other Puma Birthday events (including one with Steve) right here.

After putting the finishing touches on his award-winning science fair project, Mr. VanGaalen has found the time to bang out some mighty fine pop music that is now available to the world via Sub Pop. "City of Electric Light" is Exhibit A: elegiac acoustic simplicity garnished with tasteful percussion and xylophone. Chad is heading across the pond to the U.K. and Sweden in the next week, so download and consider a live rendezvous if you live somewhere in between Bristol and Stockholm.

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: M Pour Montreal: Woodhands - Under Attack (Woodhands Live Remix)

It was real weird to see Elvis Costello in white face popping out of a jack-in-the-box on the Colbert Christmas Special and even weirder when I saw a dead-ringer Elvis Costello leading a 2-piece dance outfit in Montreal playing a keytar. But no! It wasn't Costello, it was Toronto's Dan Werb, leading a throng of kids dancing and freaking out to the sweaty electro glory of Woodhands. Think Death From Above 1979, with the danger and the screaming replaced by all dance beats and super fun. The way the festival was set up you'd watch a band for about 5 or 6 songs, then hop to another room to watch another band, and back and forth all night long. Woodhands were operators of such an intense and prolonged dance orgy that they only were able to drop 3 songs, and "Under Attack" was one of em. Check it out as remixed by themselves, live.

DOWNLOAD: Laura Marling - Man Sings About Romance

Based on the soft chords in the opening forty seconds of "Man Sings About Romance," you'd think that Astralwerks signee and Mercury Prize nominee Laura Marling was settling in for another slow-played folk gem. But those ivories perk up pretty quickly and Marling runs headfirst into quicker tempos and scattered shakers, turning the tune into something that would draw worthy comparisons to sprightly singers like Regina Spektor and Yael Naim. Overall, it's a charming, wise-beyond-her-years track that had us at the beginning but wouldn't let go once it picked up. And for that we're thankful; it rained for awhile in New York today and we needed this.

EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE: Wild Light - California On My Mind
.jpg)
Way back in May we had the pleasure of sharing a pair of slow-roasted fistpumpers from New Hampshire quartet Wild Light. Then they disappeared into a recording studio somewhere, leaving us to subsist on nothing but BBQ sauce and stale Arcade Fire records in the interim. Wait's over. Leadoff track from their newly polished and forthcoming debut full-length Adult Nights, "California On My Mind" is a strummer and a hummer of the highest order. Much of the high-rising anthemics are still in place, though rather than let their pop jawns sneak up on you real slow-like, they put their boots on your throat instead. Sweetly and collectively.
