DOWNLOAD: WHY - These Few Presidents

Even after repeated listens, I haven't quite sorted out the whole story behind this standout track from WHY?'s full-length, "Alopecia," on Anticon, but I'm pretty sure that there is a Chinese assassin involved. Plus, I love any song that fades out and then back in, and the sudden arrival of an approaching helicopter in the last few seconds (there to pick up the assassin?) really makes it for me. Download now and be sure to check them out at the Bowery Ballroom in a few weeks. Hopefully we can sort this all out together.

Sounds Like: They Might Be Giants, Magnetic Fields, New Order

While new wave favorite Culture Club's musical achievements were largely overshadowed by the antics of their androgynous lead singer, they also came dangerously close to achieving that elusive beast known as "pure pop." Minneapolis' Solid Gold has wisely decided to follow their lead with this track off their new album, "Bodies of Water," while managing to avoid the retro-slavishness that mars the work of many of their contemporaries. Once the bass and synths lock in and establish the song's woozy groove, the vocals float high above the beat and provide a light, melodic counterpoint. Don't you think Boy George and Co. would have wanted more Dirty-South-esque synth washes if they had had them in 1985?

VIDEO THRWBCK: Toyah Wilcox - Brave New World (1982)

We just watched Jubilee, the Derek Jarman film that depicts modern-day Britain as a nihilistic apocalypse. It's really, really good, and features such punk rock icons as Jordan, Adam Ant and Jayne County. But the movie is completely overrun by Toyah Wilcox, who plays a deranged pyromaniac named Mad, a performance made even more remarkable given the fact that she was a complete novice in the punk scene when the movie was shot. You'd never know from the video for her smash single "Brave New World" though, filmed some years after Jubilee for her Changeling record. Spooky!

VIDEO THRWBCK: The Psychedelic Furs - Pretty in Pink (1986)

We're totally obsessed with Saturdays=Youth, the brand new M83 album, for a multitude of reasons, one being that it is basically a concept album about the warm, fuzzy feeling you get when watching a John Hughes movie (and of course, soaking up the soundtrack). When push comes to shove, our favorite Hughes teen epic is Pretty in Pink (Andie! Blaine! DUCKIE!), and we never get tired of watching Molly Ringwald deal with her teen angst set to a pastoral soundtrack of New Order, The Smiths, and of course The Psychedelic Furs' eponymous theme song (re-recorded from the original 1981 version for the movie's release). All together now... Isn't she... pretty in pink...

Ahhhh. Rewind. Hail Social's lastest, "No Paradise," is a blissed-out psychaledic love affair- a mix between Miami-Vice-style sunset drives, Italo-disco, soundracks to soft-core 80's French porn, and glitchy atmospheric synths. The bottom line is Dayve Hawk's built some slick, sonic sex appeal over a catchy hook. Did I mention the cooing voices reminds us of Prince's back-up singers- in spandex circa 1983? Enjoy.

Dark, sexy, deviant. Ladytron's "Black Cat," could be the theme song for either a) entering Bulgarian jail b) jetting off into space c) naked mud wrestling. It's the perfect prelude to their fourth studio album, Velocifero, which was recorded in Paris, alog with Alessandro Cortini (Nine Inch Nails) and Vicarious Bliss (Justice, DJ Hehdi) and is due out state-side in June. "Black Cat" is ferocious 1980's-edged synth glitter-glam set to a laser-sharp snare.

Exclusive juicy news? Velocifero's first single will be called Ghosts, which will be available on iTunes next month. Prrrrrr......

The Danish band The Fashion is really obsessed with knives. This might explain why their music also has a certain edge and urgency to it; it sounds a bit like the Bravery- if all The Bravery members were holding up knives and had endured a quick injection of more electro-punk beats. If you missed them this past week performing at the Fader Fort in Austin, check out the tracks below.

Pssstttt.....If you're in NY this week, they are performing with Cut Copy tonight as well as a free show at Club Midway on Tuesday, the 18th.

Not only are indie-hipster bands from Brooklyn invading the film, TV and ad world here in the states, they're popping up internationally as well. Take this example of one of our favorite new wave rock bands, Jupiter One being featured in an international spot for Mazda. The first time we heard Jupiter One's jams was actually in between sets at a Sia show a few years back. The sound guy was playing a sick groove and we were so into the track that we had to go up and ask him what it was (yes, we are nerds). Here's your chance to check out the awesomness that is Jupiter One. Check out the Mazda ad above, and for instant gratification click below to download their track "Platform Moon" from their self-titled Cordless Records album:
