FULL ALBUM STREAM: Bumblebeez - Prince Umberto & The Sister of Ill

Posted 7/23/2008 3:17 PM by Cameron Cook

Tags: rap, hip hop, pop, experimental

We’re super excited to report that sample-crazy Aussies and Modular Records signing Bumblebeez are streaming their new album Prince Umberto and the Sister of Ill, an LP that blends rap, hip hop, freestyle, post punk and pop in a kaleidoscopic array of breakbeats and early ‘90s flair. The first single from that album is “Dr Love”, which if you’ve spent any time on any dance blog these past months you have undoubtedly heard. Surprisingly, it’s not the climax of the record though—the entire thing is kind of a continuous mish mash of Neneh Cherry, Beastie Boys, Liars, The Avalanches and Lisa Lisa. In short—amazing. Enough with that, get over to the Bumblebeez RCRD LBL artist page and experience the tracks for yourself.

Sounds like: The Avalanches, Neneh Cherry, Tribe Called Quest, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam

It’s available in all fine newsagents, but the good people at Urb have made the whole interview available online. Obviously, the folks at the Downtown RCRD LBL blog have posted it for your leisure, as well as an awesome behind the scenes video of the photoshoot, along with a little chat with the Sis’. Check it out!

Cold check it! Fool’s Gold’s very own Kid Sister is on the cover of this month’s issue of URB magazine. We must say, the more we listen to those remixes she’s putting out on vinyl at the moment, the more we get into her crazy fast rhymes. If you love yourself, please check out the JFK (that’s Jesse from MSTRKRFT) remix of “Control”. So good.

Whoa, so the Warp RCRD LBL blog just casually dropped what is bound to be THE hip hop the year: Beans’ Birthday Bash this Thursday at Hiro Ballroom, with live performances by Anti-Pop Consortium, Prefuse 73, and a DJ set by none other than Fool’s Gold’s main dude Nick Catchdubs. Like, you know, no big deal or anything. Make sure to cop tickets to this jam, as it’s obviously going to be the most epic scene ever. Also, Warp released this cool Prefuse 73 remix of Beans’ “Mutescreamer”, so check that out as well. Happy birthday, Beans…

After the interplanetary success of her track with Kanye West, “Pro Nails”, we have a new Kid Sister track to tickle your fancy. It’s the exclusive JFK remix of her track “Control”, which, like the Bag Raiders remix of “Pro Nails”, blends Kid Sister’s fast-spitting rhymes with really dirty, catchy, hard electro and techno beats. JFK is the producer nom de plume of Jesse Keeler, from MSTRKRFT, so you'll totally know what to expect from this one. The track is from the brand new Kid Sister remix 12” that’s chockfull of amazing goodies (you can check it out at Turntable Lab here here). We sometimes bitch and moan about there being too many remixes out there, but this one is so club-ready you can’t help but get on board—and Kid Sis always gets our feet moving.

Sometimes great things happen by accident. Like mixing soda with ice cream. Sometimes great things happen at 2 AM by accident and it feel like magic. Like late night beatbox sessions with the recorder on.

Take the Saturday Knights - comprised of Seattle MCs Tilson and Barfly (of Seattle underground rap crew Oldominion) plus producer DJ Suspence - they started out when the dudes began drunkenly freestyle rhymes to '60s pop, doo wop, and barbershop quartet music. The song "Dog Park's" beat sounds like a pop-friendly version of LL Cool J's "Phenomena," which kinda brings back late night memories too.  Check it below.

Sounds Like: Early Cyprus Hill, Beach Boys, Gorrillaz
