EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: M Pour Montreal: Coeur de Pirate - Ensemble

This stomper from Coeur de Pirate starts with just simple piano and drum and by the end explodes into a parade of horns, with the lovely Beatrice Martin leading the charge.  Coeur de Pirate opened up the last night of M Pour Montreal at the cavernous hall that is Metropolis (Chris Cornell was headlining the next night) sitting behind a grand piano and being utterly charming and commanding on her own.  With a voice that is surprisingly strong, for all of its alluring breathiness, and a command on the piano that made her seem right at home in a concert hall, I couldn't help thinking, 'yay, a French (Canadian) Regina Spektor.'  Which is selling Beatrice short, but is definitely not a bad thing.

Sounds Like: Brigitte Bardot, Regina Spektor, Malajube, Ane Brun, Orouni

Here are the things I know about Coeur de Pirate: Beatrice Martin is the heart and voice of Coeur de Pirate, she crafts gorgeously lush piano numbers and is undeniably sexy in the way that only blonde, Bardot looking girls singing solely in French can be.  Here is what I don't know about Coeur de Pirate: despite 6 years of high school French, I'm unable to fully grasp what is being sung.  But in the same way I never stressed about reading the words projected at the Met during an Italian opera, I don't give much mind to the fact I don't understand all the words Coeur de Pirate sings.  It's not so much the words that move and entrance with these songs, but the grandeur, the simplicity, the feeling and the heart behind the 12 tunes on this self-titled debut.  And did I mention that knowing these songs come out of the pout of Beatrice Martin doesn't hurt?  Check out the video for "Comme des Enfants," and try not to fall in love with Coeur de Pirate.

If music could be audibly adorable the belle (or beau) of the ball would be Orouni.  In perfectly clipped French-accent tinted English, Orouni creates the kind of music you'd imagine Amelie or that boy with the red balloon heard in their heads.  With jaunty guitars, the playful clunk of toy pianos and the delightfully dated hum of organs, Orouni's flat franco vocals do sweet summer-dress dances with his female counterparts - the perfectly floating Mina Tindle on "The Perfume Conspiracy" and the adorable whispering of Mlie on "Panic At the Beehive."  RCRD LBL scribe Daniel Arnold featured a couple of songs from Orouni's first album and today we are pleased as punch to bring you two tracks from the upcoming Jump Out the Window, out in September via MonsterK7.  Grab these and go run through sprinklers.

Sounds like: Bill Patton, Peter Sarstedt, Phosphorescent, Shout Out Louds

If this music wasn't born on a sunny back porch in the early morning, it wasn't born at all. Orouni, in his over-enunciated broken english and tape-recorded ukelele simplicity, makes just about the quaintest, most charming songs going. Sounds like Jean Paul Belmondo as the barely convincing star of Michel Gondry (or is it Wes Anderson)'s Elliott Smith biopic, set for no reason at all on a narrow Paris side street. Of this exclusive download, Orouni says: "I've been working on new material for my next album and here is a song that almost nobody has heard yet." The others are demos from a while back.
