DOWNLOAD: Kimono Kops - The Trade

Posted 1/8/2009 12:27 PM by Samuel Duke

Tags: electro, pop, new wave, dance

More fabulous bedroom electro from Bremen, Germany's Kimono Kops, who tapped their Japan (the band) and Depeche Mode fancies for new tune "The Trade," a glib bit of dark new wave that sounds like it retained some sonic glitter through the trans-continental file transfer. The usual suspects are around: the juvie synths, the clap-heavy beats, some vogue-y m/f duetting; is nu-wave the nu-rave of '09? We're not hating.

Sounds like: Chairlift, Walter Meego, Hot Chip

DOWNLOAD: Pase Rock - Get Money Kids (Nacho Lovers Walk Remix)

Posted 1/6/2009 11:07 AM by Samuel Duke

Tags: hip-hop, dance, electro, fidget-house, house, rap

Back in November we premiered "Get Money Kids," Pase Rock's new single for Dim Mak that re-asserted his stake amongst the club-rap cognoscenti. Little did we know that up in Toronto, Fool's Gold signees Nacho Lovers were splicing together their own dub of the tune, forgoing the vocal and cutting up Eli Escobar's production into something that drifts between fidget house and electro over its six-minute length. The propellant timbale phrases are really what make this thing pop, so stick around till they get all crazy at the end and make sure to turn up the bass if you can, we're assured that this one is "mixed for the club."

Sounds like: Jesse Rose, Switch, Spank Rock

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: The Twelves - Be My Crush [The Juan MacLean's B-LIVE Rio Mix]

Posted 1/5/2009 12:12 PM by Samuel Duke

Tags: electro, dance, house, disco

If you're band is rocking--count 'em--three different MySpaces, then things are either going pretty well or you're being copped by hella nerds and even that kind of internet fandom isn't so bad for your profile. Such is life for The Twelves, the Rio-based production duo that's been blog-killing lately with tasteful, Euro-glancing electro refixes for groups like Black Kids (who they actually made sound good), M.I.A., New Young Pony Club, and Thieves Like Us. The people at Bacardi's B-Live program--responsible for those Chromeo remixes awhile back--caught wind and solicited an unreleased track from the two, "Be My Crush," which was in turn sent over to The Juan MacLean for some remix work and then gifted to us exclusively here at RCRD LBL. While Juan's remix game isn't all that frequent, it is time and again off the charts, and his usual rub-a-dub basslines and haunting disco synth washes are all over this track like they are on "Happy House." For more info on The Twelves you can watch a few clips the Bacardi people made for them down in Rio right here, and come back tomorrow for another exclusive remix from the bald-headed dance man.

Sounds like: Jaques Renault, Thieves Like Us, Holy Ghost!

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Starkey - Gutter Music + Hair Braider

Posted 12/26/2008 12:09 PM by Kev Kharas

Tags: wonky, electro, grime, drumnbass, dubstep

Philadelphian son he may be, but Starkey’s chops and glugs sound honed in Croydon, England; where shack-ish train portals shuttle passengers through an undergrowth of industrial towers at the blurred, suburban edges of London’s consciousness. “Gutter Music”, parts pulled from Metalheadz drum’n’bass, Wiley’s grime, Skream’s Plastician-era dubstep and imported electro, rattles and hums along like one of Croydon's modded Vauxhall Novae; alloy rims gleaming, dump valve wheezing, blue neons glowing beneath, illegal. The perfect soundtrack for when the rudeboys turn the town into a racetrack every Saturday night, Starkey – real name PJ Geissinger – packs the beats you’ll hear pumping at car park pit stops, his remix of R. Kelly’s “Hair Braider” hyped and live with teenboy fantasies of a girl who’ll thread your extensions, smoke your weed and empty your balls over the course of the same evening.

Sounds Like: Skream, Rustie, Joker

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Bell Hollow - The Bottle Tree (Peter Du Charme Remix)

Posted 12/23/2008 10:44 AM by Samuel Duke

Tags: electro, house, pop, post-punk

Continuing their exclusive remix EP for us here at RCRD LBL, New York post-punk group Bell Hollow turn to producer Peter Du Charme to give the once over to their tune "The Bottle Tree." Over a steady electro-house low end, Du Charme keeps the original's metallic bass line adds some cut-up sheets of synthesizers, winding up with a version that sounds like Justin Timberlake's "My Love" played by New Order or something to that effect. It's one of the stronger remixes of the bunch, so if you've been following these make sure to pick this one up.

Sounds like: New Order, The Human League, Cruel Black Dove

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: N.A.S.A. - Money (The Count Of Monte Cristal 'Dungeon' Remix)

Posted 12/17/2008 11:00 AM by Samuel Duke

Tags: house, electro, hip-hop, funk, bassline

N.A.S.A began when DJ's and producers Sam Spiegel (Squeak E Clean) and Ze Gonzales (DJ Zegon) met at a studio party in Brazil, bonding over a shared devotion to American hip-hop and Brazilian funk. Pairing up to experiment on some tracks the following day, they found themselves forming what would become N.A.S.A. (North America/South America), and began piecing together The Spirit Of Apollo, their five-years-in-the-making debut album for Anti- that features guest appearances from the likes of Nick Zinner, David Byrne, E-40, Tom Waits, Karen O, Sizzla, and a bevy of others. Hell of a Rolodex, right? The folks at Anti- were kind of enough to shoot over an exclusive remix of lead single "Money" from The Count Of Monte Cristal aka Machines Don't Care aka Hervé, who eschews a lot of the guest appearances on the track (that would be David Byrne, Chuck D, Seu Jorge, Ras Congo and Z-Trip) for some skittish bassline house breaks and effected soul drops. It's loaded with those distinctly Northern, almost drum n bass-ish rhythms, but the original's global, sampladelic vibe hasn't been lost in translation.

Sounds like: The Count & Sinden, Buraka Som Sistema, Radioclit

DOWNLOAD: Passion Pit - Sleepyhead (Streetlab Remix)

Posted 12/16/2008 2:27 PM by Samuel Duke

Tags: electronica, pop, electro, dance

We are admitted fans of Passion Pit's crystalline falsetto workout "Sleepyhead," though the original recording's never really offered the thump that makes their live gigs so great. Cue a slew of recent reworkings, largely due to Palms Out's remix contest for the tune that ended last week and got the audio stems out on the web. We're not sure if the guys in Streetlab submitted this or not, but its snub is a shame, since they've added some great French-touch bounce with percolating kicks and Gumby-ish synthesizers. It's tasteful and not too much, something we can't say for the ones that won the contest.

Sounds like:
Passion Pit, DJ Mehdi, A-Trak

EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Curumin - Caixa Preta

Posted 12/15/2008 3:57 PM by Faith-Ann Young

Tags: funk, samba, electro

Who doesn't like Brazil? Even when reduced to its finer stereotypes: beaches, carnivals, coffee, rain forests, soccer, models, fiery foods, and waxes, Brazil is richly endowed. Not to mention the crazed amount of sizzling electronic groups oozing out of Brazil these days......(CSS, Bonde do Role, etc..) But Brazilian soundmaster Curumin escapes most stereotypes by weaving manifold influences into a passion pot of electro samba-funk flavor. Born of Japanese and Spanish parents (Sao Paulo has one of the highest populations of Japanese outside of Japan), Luciano Nakata Albuquerque goes by "Curumin", a Portuguese term reserved by indigenous Brazilians for their more precocious children. His song "Caixa Preta" (i.e. "Black Box" in Porguese) will remind you of the energy of Manu Chao, with more street, hip-hop fire, and splashes of native Brazilian samba and baile funk.

Sounds Like: Bonde Do Role, Novos Baianos, Manu Chao, Mexican Institute of Sound

This track will slaughter all your morals, throw your body onto a crystal-covered dance floor and induce you to writhe with strangers until late late hours. In a good way. Sure it's only Monday but why not flirt with danger? Signed with the illustrious Modular label, the Aussie crew Van She is known for infusing riotous 80's-inspired synthesizer beats into promising tracks by The Whip, Ladyhawke, The Teenagers and The Presets. Here they've revamped Dragonette's electro-pop track, "I Get Around," with foolproof musical aphrodisiacs: glitchy synth groans and scintillating house beats.

Following his remix last week of You Say Party! We Say Die!'s "Teenage Hit Wonder," we're unloading a pair of bubbly electro tunes from British producer Camp America, who's given the once over to some artists for a remix EP on Paper Bag. Today it's his version of Helicopters' track "Rotofugi", which kind of sounds like Flock Of Seagulls if they'd actually had some game, and a remix of The Framework's "Wasted," which has a big blue-eyed hook and kind of sounds like a more glammy Cut Copy. Get into them both below and check back for another round of remixes next week.
