ARCHIVE TRACK: Controller.Controller - History

For those of you unfamiliar with controller.controller this will be a quick education. They were an indie rock band from Toronto who took their name from a song by Shotmaker. Unromantically and without mystery they came together in 2002 following a phone call or four from soon-to-be guitarist Ronnie Morris.
In early 2003 controller.controller shakily played their first gigs and despite their humble beginnings they did something few bands managed at that time; made Toronto audiences dance.
Their sound was an energetic, rhythmic post-punk rock, taking cues from late 70's and early 80's bands like P.I.L., The Slits and Joy Division, but departing significantly from there. They were about tension and opposition; juxtaposing discordant and jagged rhythms with disarmingly pretty melodies and counter-melodies. They wed propulsive, angular rock structures with minimalist death-disco accents and grooves that seductively embraced sometimes sweet and sometimes barking vocals.
Debut album, History, was released on Paper Bag Records in 2004 to much critical acclaim and we thought you might like to hear the title track.
