for a good few weeks, we in the Warp New York office have been listening to Red, Yellow and Blue by the Born Ruffians an average of once a day (sometimes twice). the sing-alongs have gotten worse and worse, and i am sincerely worried for our neighbors as we are only becoming more fond of the album with each listen.
with the album release getting closer and closer, we couldn't stop ourselves from giving everyone another taste. Badonkadonkey is a track that demonstrates exactly why singing along with the Born Ruffians is almost unavoidable. the sparse hook leaves room for the vocals to dominate the landscape - the lyrics repeating like a round in a folk traditional or a blues classic.
the Ruffians unabashedness gives their music an engaging intimacy that silences the cynical and jaded - reminding us that things don't need to be dark, obscure and depressing to be enjoyable. like a great undiscovered band at a house party, they're playing their hearts out, and you can't keep yourself from staying to listen a while.

i highly recommend catching them on tour - you'll leave the show smiling.

last week, on no sleep after a gig, the Born Ruffians did a shoot a bit for the British show Skins. just two days before, a screen printer had decided he couldn't any longer supply us with a printed drum skin, much to the panic of everyone involved. long story short - we had a vinyl sticker made on a rush order, and thought things were all taken care of.
i got a call during the afternoon of the shoot informing me that the drum skin was black, which didn't quite allow the sticker we had made to 'pop' - black on black can be quite a nice, subtle choice, but it isn't a colour scheme often used for name recognition. a quick trip to guitar center, and a cab ride later, and we had an almost assembled skin:

(i must apologize for the iphone's lowlight shortcomings.)
after this picture was taken, we did manage to fix the skin, and we been assured by the director and producer that we would get a nice shot of the drum in the show. we'll remain hopeful, but it wouldn't be all that surprising to find this effort doesn't make the final cut.
such is the glory of the music business.
