EXCLUSIVE NEW DOWNLOAD: Restiform Bodies - Pick It Up Drop It (Feat. Genghis Tron Remix)

Atmospheric hip hop sound like an oxymoron? Experimental hip hop crew Restiform Bodies have apparently managed to create just that. While the lyrics are a heavy dissertation against commercialism: junkies, bargain hunters, animal control, and strip malls, Genghis Tron has added waves of synths and light lasers to surround the song in a light, airy haze. Takes down-tempo to a new level.

Forget that Evagelia Maravelias' voice sounds like dead-ringer for Madonna. Instead, ease back and soak your head in the atmospheric production. Elika's tracks are to music as danish furniture is to design: cool, calm, crisp and clean, thanks to producer Brian Wenckebach's beat layering and Evagelia's ethereal voice. Sure, there's a tang of shoe-gaze guitar here, a snippet of melancholic Mazzy Star there- but otherwise modern, day-dreamy, atmospheric pop (with emphasis on pop). In a word, it's refreshing.

Some songs just shock you for their simplicity and ethereal nature. Like a morning wake-up call, they douse you on the head with cold water or sink you into interminable introspection- within which you just keep on pressing repeat, repeat, repeat. Loney, Dear’s “Ignorant Boy Beautiful Girl” is one of those tracks. Good for journeys and daydreams, it carves a clear expanse in your mind through simple breaths/hums and a couple cardinal vocals. Like those old-school atmospheric tracks in Moby’s “Play.”

FYI Loney, Dear is in fact Emil Svanängen, a Swedish multi-instrumentalist and home-recording artist for whom crafting melodies is a stark, demanding, and intensely cherished practice made for small rooms and basements.

Balun came in to my life via a cold winter night in Chicago last year- the kind where the condensation from my nose froze mid-air.  I was headed to Schubas to watch Pop Levi. Schubas is where music heads both work and play- so I wasn't surprised that the door guy also worked for a record label (Brilliante Records). I was a bit surprised when he asked for my email....before I even entered the joint. But since he said knew some great Chicago indie rock music, with frozen fingers, I jotted it down. A few emails and a CD package later, he introduced me to the decidedly un-Chicago act Balun.

Balun hails from San Juan Puerto Rico, Kent OH. and Astoria, NY. They craft atmospheric electronica with echos that swirl and unfurl like Son Lux and the ethereal lightness of Beach House.  I listened to their album on repeat throughout the winter months. I lost touch of the door guy. The band I haven't forgotten.
