DOWNLOAD: Tortoise - Prepare Your Coffin

A lot has changed in the five years since Tortoise last graced us with new material, not least of which includes a transformative new president and the current recession. With so much change around them, the band seem to have undergone a significant shift themselves: Rather than another album of chin-scratching post-rock, they aim for psychedelic instrumental rock on Beacons of Ancestorship, out June 23rd via Thrill Jockey. After listening to "Prepare Your Coffin," listeners could easily interpret the album title to mean Tortoise are looking back at some of the greatest rock instrumentalists. Its searing guitar leads spiral ever higher as they become intertwined, recalling Frank Zappa, Soft Machine or even King Crimson at their most concise. For a group often associated with academic noodling, this loose and fiery side Tortoise is a welcome surprise.
