RIP - OUR FRIEND CHARLIE COOPER

Posted 2/5/2009 9:43 AM by ghostly

The music world and the world at large lost a great artist and friend in Charlie Cooper, known to many as one half of the Chicago/New Orleans duo Telefon Tel Aviv.

Charlie was a longtime friend of ours, and many of us have had the honor of performing with him numerous times. Right after we started the label, we took a trip to Chicago and met with the Hefty Records team. It was there we found a friend and ally for life in Charlie. We've always enjoyed Charlie's wit, sincerity, and kindness.

Charlie left us on the eve of his final masterpiece with Telefon Tel Aviv partner Joshua Eustis, Immolate Yourself, but his musical legacy is immeasurable. iTunes has curated a special section of Telefon's collected works for you to enjoy and share with others.

Two years ago, Ghostly also lost one of our main inspirations and heroes, David "Disco D" Shayman. Dave gave us the inspiration to start a label, and his open heart and kindness were always refreshing in an often-jaded music industry. Dave started as a 16-year-old DJ in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and worked his way up from there, producing songs for Santogold, 50 Cent, Trick Daddy, and many other new and upcoming musicians. For fans and friends of Disco D, you can stay up-to-date by visiting his Facebook page.

Information on donations and memorials in Charlie's honor is forthcoming, while the Ann Arbor teen center Neutral Zone currently accepts donations on Disco D's behalf to benefit its electronic-music programs.
