There are a few of rules for encores.  1. Only do them when a good 60% of the audience just will not leave. 2. Do not road test new tunes, play that one awesome song from your first record you didn't play yet. 3. Kick ass covers are encouraged.  The bands involved in Engine Room's compilations Guilt By Association are all set on that final point.  My Brightest Diamond take the oft covered "Tainted Love," and make it all disco diva, an indie Donna Summer if you will.  Takka Takka take one of my favorite Phil songs and make "In the Air Tonight" lovely and mournful and modern. The whole compilation is just real guilty-pleasure fun.  For more fun, there will be release parties for Guilt By Association Vol. 2 this Saturday and next Thursday in Brooklyn and the Bowery.  Rest assured, there will be no lack of kick ass covers.
