Abe Vigoda's new record is incredible. Following on from last year's Skeleton longplayer, Reviver EP finds the LA quartet breaking new ground once again; a version of Stevie Nicks' (yes) "Wildheart" and a re-worked "Endless Sleeper" dragging their tropical punk into a gloom only briefly glimpsed in the darkest moments of Skeleton. "Don't Lie" tempers the light and the shade, rising then falling in a familiar chorus of guitars tuned to sound like steel pans, doting bass gargles and Reggie Guerrero's perfectly spoiled rhythm. There's no stalling Vigoda - a band that seem able to evolve ceaselessly, careening off toward the nearest horizon. Reviver gets its US release on February 17 through PPM and will arrive in the UK through Bella Union at some point in the next two months.
