I've always found the term "intelligent dance music" both confusing and condescending, since it presupposes a certain dumbness on the part of the creator. If brains and rhythm were mutually exclusive, I'm guessing my iTunes would have about 12 songs on it. Telefon Tel Aviv's new song is a perfect example: OMD-ish synth-driven gems aren't the product of the feeble minded. Someone has to pick all the right sounds and all the right textures and then fit them together just so; the tricky thing is making it seem so simple, as if the song just wafted in through an open window and settled on the console. Judging by the above picture the TTA control room is an airy affair, allowing them the space to give each vintage synthesizer its own little home. Believe me, there's nothing worse than a crowded synth.

Sounds Like: Cut Copy, Supermayer, The Field
