"Chillaxing" with SHY CHILD (Nate and Pete)
RCRD LBL's Associate Editor Faith-Ann Young caught a few words with drummer Nate Smith and singer/keytarist Pete Cafarella from Shy Child backstage at Sydney Australia's "Big Day Out" Music Festival in the beginning of this year. Sitting on a picnic bench with beers, Nate and Pete talked about opening for Bjork at the Sydney Opera House two days earlier, playing live, and their 'neurosis'.
FAY: How did it feel opening for Bjork on the most famous Aussie monument The Opera House?
Pete: I tried not to vomit.
Nate: You were going to have a heart attack.
Peter: Before the show, we were in this backstage room in the bowels of the Opera House. The room was soundproof so it was so fucking quiet. You could hear yourself breathe. I got wigged out. And then, we were onstage, and it was just amazing playing at that venue.
FAY: You both live in NY, but relocated to London for a bit. Do you notice a difference between the US and UK crowds?
Nate: Well, we are a band with loud synths and no guitar. In the US, that is an obstacle.
Pete: The 'guitar thing' is insurmountable in the US. If you don't have a guitar, it's like the US audience don't feel like you are a real band. There aren't those restraints in London or Oz. They don't have that preconceived notion.
FAY: Do you enjoy playing at these {day} festivals?
Pete: We prefer to play in the night-time…We don't like to delineate the faces in the crowd.
Nate: We like seeing them, but just not perfect.
FAY: How is your recording process different than your live show?
Pete: Recording is like a separate entity. It's not a fancy process. It's making something.
Nate: Live- we just like playing together.
Pete: The nice thing about the two of us is there is no band drama.
FAY: If you could do a soundtrack to any film what would it be?
Pete: Ghostbusters III. Definitely Ghostbusters III.
Nate: Nah- see you'd want to take a film that has the worst music to start with and make it better (looking at Pete). Take Sleepless in Seattle- we'd do some psychedelic shit.
FAY: Is there anything else your fans should know?
Nate: What do you mean? About Pete's neurosis? (laughs)
Pete: What?
Nate: You know, your neurosis. (Swigs beer). It's like if Geroge Costanza and Larry David were in a band together.
Pete: That is the worst combination I have ever heard. I am so insulted.
Nate: (laughs) Nah, seriously we are not crazy fuckers. We are a quality band.
